I’ve been working hard the last week or so. Here’s what I’ve been up to!

*~ Published the 2nd Glitterati Chapter! This month’s moon is the Flower Moon!
*~ Took photos at aceart inc.
*~ Started following along with Steve Pavlina’s Passive Income Series
*~ Started putting together Glitterati Kits for the website!

Life wise, this has been a really busy couple of weeks for me. I went out to my first art show in a long time, been sick, been cleaning the house, & baking tiny, pink-coloured bread for the Flower Moon! xo

The past week, I borrowed a room at a local artist-run centre named aceart to take photos for an art project I’m working on for Mylene’s character sketch. They offer lots of services to developing artists and they were very generously letting me use one of their rooms for the photos. They’ve got white walls which makes things very easy for what I want to do. A bunch of people have volunteered to help me out & I ended up with a great amount for the project I want to do. It also gave me an opportunity to start telling lots of people about this project and what I’m trying to do. After a while, when you’re meeting three or four people a day to take pictures and explain what they’re being used for, you start feeling less self-conscious about saying “Hey! I’m going to be a self-published author!”. Heh. ♥

On that note, I also started following along with Steve Pavlina’s Passive Income Series. He’s posting a series of step-by-step articles on how to create a new passive income stream for yourself. It’s kind of perfect timing & Steve’s writing has often inspired me in the past. I picked a clear goal for how much I want to make per month and will be following along with him post-by-post!

I’ve also been exploring different art resources in my city, for my own supplies and for supplies for the goddess festival fundraiser. I went to Artsjunktion a couple of times over the last few weeks and crafting supplies have slowly started to take over our living room. Today, my roommate & I explored a drop-in art studio program where you can make things. If I forget to mention it, my city is an amazing place to be. There are so many resources available to us. I feel like by using my resources in an intelligent way, I can really provide well for myself as I transition jobs.

Speaking of resources, I found a recipe on the internet the other day for homemade glue using sugar, flower, water, and vinegar. And apparently it dries clear?! I’m so excited to try this out. My crafting is going to be so awesome if I can make glue cheaply and in an environmentally friendly way. ♥

I’ve been thinking this week, as I’ve been starting to work on some Glitterati Society kits, about how to make art and creation as environmentally sustainable as possible. There are many ways to get the supplies that we need, but there’s often so much abundance around us that we don’t even notice. Taking trips to local art programs has really shown me that I don’t need to spend a ton on art supplies. A lot of what I need for these creations I can get from recycled elements or my kitchen.

Keeping things in a closed cycle is a very holistic way of making art. If I know where everything comes from, I can ensure that it’s safe to return to that cycle. It’s a bit more trial and error than buying commercially made supplies, but it’s certainly cheaper.

Artsjunktion is a great example. They’re a depot centre were people can drop-off various art and household supplies to be used in art. Anyone can come and cart the stuff away for free. There’s always a surprise to be found here, especially if you’re open to going with the flow. You can find material, paper, wood, almost anything you can think of to make your creations out of.

There’s magic in this too – in exploring what’s around, harvesting your supplies from the world, and making something beautiful from them. I’ve been looking for more natural alternatives to harsh chemicals or adhesives. Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be trying a few different glue recipes made from kitchen supplies that I already have around. It’s safer for everyone and something about using natural ingredients, crafted from ethical sources from beginning to end really amplifies the enchantment I think.

For example, this moon is about inviting the Summer Queen’s court to stay with us. A faerie might love the little house you built, but might not be able to endure the harsh chemicals in the adhesive used. Or may not like what happens as that adhesive leeches out into the environment. We can’t really avoid chemicals, but we can do our best to create a harmonious, healthy environment in the spaces we occupy.

*~ Glitterati Kits are coming soon to the website! ♥
*~ Don’t forget, this weekend is the Full Moon! Go make magic!

Until next time,
xo Katrina

*~ A New Community! Pricing, websites, genres, oh my! ~*

I’ve really been getting my feet wet in the world on writing blogs the last few weeks. I’ve learned practical things, political things, and began to get a stronger sense of what I do and do not want to do thanks to the advice of others. Self-publishing is a world all its own! One I’m very happy to be learning about.

The big thing I’m learning (and that I felt was going to be important) is to really put the time in to build something beautiful. I know that it’s not going to be a quick transition into a new career, especially not one that depends so much on me learning how to produce regularly, market, and build connections – but I know it’s worth it. This is what I’ve always wanted to do and I believe in myself enough to give myself the time to figure it out.

And it’s not just about patience either! There are so many things that I’m learning every day, it’s kind of exciting. If you look at it as an adventure, it’s pretty stimulating. For example, I never knew that genre could be so important. I know the stories that I write generally fall somewhere in between urban fantasy, science fiction, and romance… but what do you even call that? Even though most writers I like cross genres, it seems to be important to be able to describe it – even if it’s always changing!

I’ve loved building this website, thinking about what it could be and mean. There are so many options of things to put on here. I want the website itself to be more than just a placeholder for the things I’m writing. I want it to be a fun experience.

I’m also trying to balance writing projects with creating projects. I want to create many different kinds of things, but that have a common thread that makes emotional sense to people who are reading the story. I don’t want the story to take a backseat to these other projects, but I also want this to be more than just a story.

This kind of framework is going to take time and patience for me to build, but that time is exactly what I need to pace my growth so that I can keep moving forward without sacrificing the joy and skill-building I can have at every stage.

*~ Creating a Win-Win with other collaborators ~*

In the last week I’ve had meetings with two photographers and been taking a lot of photos of volunteers for an art project related to “The City With No Animals”. In both situations, I’ve been learning how to collaborate with others and how to make experiences a win-win situation.

In my meetings with the photographers, I came with an idea of what I wanted from the exchange. This is important for any kind of agreement, deal, or contract. It’s good to know bare minimum what you want, what you can be flexible about, and what to you doesn’t feel like a fair exchange. For example, I knew that I wanted pictures of Mylene to go on this website and that I wanted some images that could be used later on in some other projects I have planned. Basically, I’m asking these artists for two separate things: digital use rights as well as an undetermined use in the future.

When you’re discussing the terms of use for someone’s art, you have to clearly define what you’re going to use it for so that individual can ensure that they’re getting fairly compensated for their work. Most often the artists I’ve worked with have two different pricing systems. Either a royalty-based payment agreement or a flat-fee payment agreement. In my case, I knew strongly that I wanted images usable for the website, this blog, and social networking websites. All these fall under digital use and are clear terms. During my meeting with one of the photographers, she had a set rate for an hour of shooting, We figured out exactly how many delivered images was reasonable for the both of us (even if you pay a photographer for their time, depending on the assignment they may only give you a certain amount of images that are usable for your needs). We discussed copyrights and watermarking (none for the website but watermarks for the images on social networking websites), as well as how she would be paid (50% deposit the day of the shoot, the rest on delivery of the retouched images). All of these things were really important for us to discuss so that both parties knew what they were agreeing to.

As for my other use for the images later on, since I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do yet – we decided that when the time came we would sit down and have another meeting. I gave her some preliminary information, like the range I’m willing to pay for the use of images, but nothing is set in stone until we hammer out specifics and write it down. Afterwards, I emailed her the notes I took from our meeting so that we both had it in writing.

This is a kind of transaction I’m getting really comfortable with. I had some experience before negotiating contracts, but working with Michèle Liza Pelayre of Sugaroverkill.com recently helped me hammer out some specifics are working with artists and their images.

My other experience with collaborating this week is coming from working with volunteers for a character sketch project for “The City With No Animals”. Volunteers came and helped me build an idea and then let me take photos of them to help execute that idea. A few times I’ve gotten feedback that the volunteers had a fun time doing it, especially because they got to build the character themselves. This was really positive for me. When you’re writing, you can often have a specific idea in your head as to what you want to make. But I’m learning that it’s good to know what I need control over and what I don’t. For example, I know how I want Mylene to look and what her history is. There’s a way I know I want her story to unfold. But for this project, I left a lot of space for the volunteers to fill in their own stories. Simply because they could create a wider variety of characters and qualities that I would have never thought of on my own. Having a basic idea for them to play with, but letting their creativity take over made it a really fun experience for me, & it sounds like for them too!

*~ Introduction ~*

Crumbs is the first novella in Elora Bishop’s lesbian fairytale retellings called “Sappho’s Fables”. It’s a project she’s working on with her wife Jennifer Diemer, who is an author & editor in her own right.

“Crumbs” is a retelling of “Hansel and Greta”, with a post-apocalyptic/suspenseful twist. Han & Greta live with their family in the “Heap”, in a world overrun by “ragers” – a kind of zombie . Even though their family is starving, they’ve held on hope that if they can get to the “Metal Forest” they’ll be saved. Their resources are past gone by the time their parents decide to take a chance on a group of strangers with a car and try to make it. Unfortunately for Mother & Father and as Han & Greta find out too late, their parents saviors are showing early signs of the disease. Heartbroken and alone, wondering whether or not their parents have given up, Han & Greta decide to try for the Metal Forest themselves on bikes.

*~ What Worked For Me ~*

This is a great world Elora has made for us to play around in. Abandoned cities, dwindling human populations, old candy factories & shops… it’s a magical place touched with the horror of the fact that most human beings have becoming Elora’s version of zombies.

The story progresses much in the same arc as the original fairytale, even though the outcome is very different. Abandonment by parents, the children setting out, coming across a delicious candy-coated haven, and the escalation as Greta tries to find out what’s really going on. Stylistically, I find this really pleasing. It’s different enough that it’s a retelling unique to the author, but similar enough that I can see the inspiration and still call it a retelling.

The relationship between the characters and the mounds of sweets is also really neat. Elora weaves a suspenseful spell, leaving us wondering who to trust and just how deadly those sweets might be.

And strangely, though Greta is not my favourite of Elora’s heroines – her voice is strong. I remembered Greta even after I’d finished and moved onto another book. Considering Greta is a bit different in how she thinks and expresses herself from Elora’s other heroines I’ve met, it’s a very good sign that Elora can write her strong and write her well.

*~ What Didn’t Work For Me ~*

I often find myself wishing we could spend a bit more time in Elora’s worlds. Most of her books are novellas, which doesn’t often lend itself to thoroughly immersing yourself in a new world. I find that I fall in love with a world, just to move onto the next one. And while each one is beautiful, I would love to have a bit more time before moving on again. Maybe even a sequel?

I also have a hard time with humans who in a zombie-fied world do not learn the basics of self-defense or prepare appropriately before moving from one place to another. Especially if they’ve lived in a world of zombies for some time. Even if you’re not the best fighter or don’t think defensively, you’ve survived somehow and I think I would have liked to have seen more of that – if not from Greta, then maybe from Han or even their parents – some clue that they’ve been doing something the past few years aside from twiddling their thumbs. If I’m setting out on bikes through a path of zombies on my one and only chance of surviving, I’m bringing something to hit with.

Elora often works with “forever” love in her stories – that sense of coming home with your soulmate, which is beautiful and inspiring. And while Greta’s relationship in this story doesn’t quite was as poetically about that in the same was as other stories Elora’s written, there are still some linguistic choices by the author that imply we’re heading down that path. I’d really like to be able to explore different kinds of relationships with this author – adolescent ones, tragic ones, the relationships that help you get to “the one”, the ones after “the one”. There isn’t a lot of the mystery of love to explore, since I’m pretty sure early on I know how it’s going to play out and that we’re on a set path. It might be nice to see a story with some unexpected twists and turns in the love story. I’m learning this is kind of the thing with romance – that we feel very comfortable with that set path of A & B are going to end up together so let’s just see how they do it. Maybe that’s part of the pleasure of it, but it might be nice to switch it up a bit. I think Elora gets love on a deep level that can transcend the set path & I’m excited to see what she can do with it, what she can teach us about it.

*~ Closing ~*

I love Elora. Literally. I think she’s lovely & she’s doing some very important with these fairytale retellings. She & Jennifer Diemer are giving us beautiful stories that show us the power of love & magic. The characters feel deeply, love deeply, and inspire us to be a little more trusting and open-hearted with our own love stories.

Saturday night was the New Moon, which means a new Glitterati chapter is released!

The Glitterati Society is a handbook to the art of enchantment and making magic. Each new moon, a new chapter is released and is available for purchase for $0.99! Once you’ve purchased it, you will be given a download link for the PDF file.

Here’s a look at what this moon is about!

Last moon, we laid a path for magic by choosing enchanting spaces and making our love for them known with little gifts, crystals to clear the energy, and our intentions for beautiful things to happen. This moon, we’re going to make a path for magic to find its way to us and make space to welcome what comes to visit.

You see, love – this coming moon is known as the Flower Moon. It is a moon of growing warmth, of welcoming and opening ourselves to bounty & abundance. It is when we welcome the Summer Queen and her court to our realm and seek her blessing and offer her ours.

While working on Mylene’s character study, I thought a good way to visualize how her daily was different than mine would be to list some differences between my world and hers.

There are no animals. As such, there are many products that either don’t exist or that the city has to find other ways of making.

Terminology ~ The main sentient creatures are called “kin” or “folk”.

Almost everything comes from a sustainable source ~ Everything they need for daily life comes from the earth cycle, with few exceptions related to technology. Even so, these things still function as close to the earth cycle as possible.

Business is a game ~ While commerce is an important part of social life, it’s benefit comes from social reasons instead of economic. Business is a large game played from city to city during a set time period. Industries focus on art, fashion, luxury, technology, etc. The goal is to make the most money during the set fiscal year, after which the totals are reset for the next round. Etiquette is a large part of the business game and being a good player is considered valuable. The aim of the game is to achieve greater social status, as well as money. Because of the deeply bred values of the earth, no business person would put the gain of money over the health of resources as that would be considered foolish and taking the game “too seriously”.

Gender Roles ~ Gender roles are chosen rather than associated to a physical body type.

Sexuality ~ As long as it’s consensual, there are no social taboos around sexuality. Because of the low birth rate of children, there is also less association with sex as a reproductive function and more of it as a pleasurable activity.

Basic Needs & City Citizenship ~ Every city in the present day has the same citizenship system, in which citizens register with the city and receive a monthly income and free access to food from public gardens. Every citizen receives the same monthly amount which is enough to cover basic needs. Citizenship also gives them access to public services, such as education and health services.

AI ~ The public functions of the larger cities are run by AIs, which control the public services and bank accounts. Some cities treat their AIs like public idols. Edyn, D-City’s AI has fan clubs. Others are more retiring ~ White City’s AIs only come out during city festivals.

Well, it’s been a busy time here on the site since I started seriously building it about six weeks ago. A few really awesome things have happened in that time!

*~ The site went live! Huzzah!
*~ I found an editor & a designer!
*~ I started The Glitterati Society!
*~ I commissioned my first piece of artwork for the site from Sugaroverkill.com!
*~ I started a mailing list!

I’ve been settling into a good routine. Before starting this project I worked 3 different kinds of jobs on a freelance basis and one standard part-time, volunteered with 3 groups, and was trying to balance that with a social life. I quit a bunch of things to make space for my new goal of becoming a self-published author. I also have a lot more time to just relax & be. I’ve been cooking at lot at home, baking, going to yoga, going to capeoira. I even went swimming last weekend!

I’ve also been working on a fundraiser for the Manitoba Goddess Festival this year. It’s the only volunteer commitment I’ve kept & this year, my official title is “Temple co-ordinator”! Neat *^_^*

I’ve planned an interactive storytelling event that will require a lot of crafting. I’m hoping it goes well. I’m working hard!

Self-publishing is like a whole new internet community for me. I’ve been exploring blogs and websites and finding tons of interesting conversation going on about the future of publishing and the business of being a writer. With everyone’s help, I feel very excited about what’s been happening.

This week, I started looking for photographers to do a photoshoot for the next part of the Materials Collection. While I’ve been getting in the groove of writing regularly and producing content, I’ve also been learning about hiring & working with other creatives to create things. I want Faerie Dark not only to bring good things to me, I want it to be something good and abundant for my creative community as well.

Something that occurred to me while I was writing the first Glitterati chapter was the traditional roles repeated over and over through fairytales and folklore. Each chapter of TGS includes a short fairytale and while writing them, I wanted to expand beyond the perceived roles of the characters.

Because I’m queer, I’m always looking for representations of myself in work. Any individual who feels unique or marginalized because of some aspect of themselves does the same.

These traditional roles are easy to pull out of a hat but the constant repetition creates a huge vacuum in story-telling.

Setting aside the standard princess & prince roles for a moment, let’s talk about secondary characters. For this moon’s chapter of The Glitterati Society, I made reference to the protagonist’s parents. When doing so, I realized that I’d never read a fairytale where the secondary characters stepped outside a heterosexual pairings. If the parents aren’t together, it’s because something tragic happened (sickness/death/etc). It’s a flat stereotype.

We live in a world with a thousand different ways of being. From sexuality to gender to family structure, our lives are part of a spectrum of being and I think fairytales should represent that.

The world that Faerie Dark takes place in is kind of perfect for this. They’re a people for whom love and desire have been recognized as important emotional and psychological building blocks. When writing the Palace of the Four Seasons fable, I started off with all four queens being married to the Sea King. Why? Because it’s what I was used to. I wanted all of them to be connected and having a single husband and four wives was a plausible element for the story.

But when discussing the story with a friend of mine who is polyamorous, I realised I had an interesting opportunity. Why weren’t there any stories about polyamorous couples? Why couldn’t there be? I knew from writing that a few of the creatures that ruled the calendar had special relationships between them. Maybe they weren’t platonic. I had to ask myself – what fit best with the world I was trying to weave. I had to think outside of what I knew.

Writing is a space to break ground. Besides using social activism to inspire change, we need examples of other ways of being, language to share and understand. Writing, especially writing as a self-published author, gives me space to explore and express ideas. Even experiment with them. Normalcy in alternate lifestyles in fiction can be a powerful tool for social change.

~* I’ve been getting a lot of good advice from Lindsay Buroker.
~* I started playing Pottermore & was sorted into Slytherin. Bwaha.
~* I’ve been watching her videos like mad.
~* I WENT TO SEE THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIE! ACK! LOVED IT! ♥

Until next time,

The reason I started this website was because I have a dream to make a living as a self-published author.

I’ve had many jobs over the years and this year, I wanted to really explore writing and creating the job of my dreams. I want to tell stories.

I’ve been working as a writer the last year or so, getting paid to write for online projects and print magazines. I know through that experience that I really want to try self-publishing because I want to understand every part of the process and I really want to create something that aligns by my own vision. Seeking out a publisher doesn’t feel like a good fit for me right now – especially since I’m very used to working or myself.

I’ve also been greatly inspired by the success of my friend Sarah Diemer, who currently publishes YA fiction and adult fiction as a self-published author. Watching Sarah go through the stages from releasing her first e-book to becoming a full-time writer and artist has been a wonderful experience.

Every person is different and it’s going to take some experimentation to see exactly how I’m going to earn a living and what works for me. My first step was writing the first draft of the story “The City With No Animals”. This part took months. It was a long time since I’d finished a story of any length, but I kept at it bit by bit until I was done. Once I read through it, it became really obvious that it was a first draft and that a lot of things had developed through the course of writing it.

My second step was creating this website.

Ever since I started creating the world of Faerie Dark, I knew I wanted to include lots of immersive and tangible elements outside just the stories themselves. I love art projects and things that blur the line between one reality and the next. That’s how the “Materials Collection” came to be a large part of writing these stories. The added bonus is that after completing some more projects, I’d definitely have a better sense of what the world “felt” like and could tackle my next draft of the story with new eyes and hopefully, more solid understanding.

An Editor
Next, I wanted to find an editor. An editor is a huge part of how a story comes out. I felt that being an editor was probably a lot more creative that it’s often given credit for. I was hosting a book launch at the bookstore I work in one evening, and it was for a french book and its english translation. Both the editor and the translator were there with the author and both had very loving things to say about the work. In reality, it was more than the author who had brought the story to life. I want someone I can work with long term, who I feel like I can get to know and who can get to know the world I want to build. My first choice was Jennifer Diemer.

I really really really wanted Jenn because 1) she is a wonderfully creative person who makes beautiful, magical things, 2) she also happens to be Sarah’s lovely wife & editor, and I love reading Sarah’s books. Her voice and spirit really comes through and I felt that I would be very lucky to work with someone who did such a good job with someone else’s books. She’s a good editor. And 3) I had a feeling that I wanted to work with her. The idea filled me with a kind of fluttering excitement.

Lucky for me, Jenn was very open to the idea when I talked to her about it. I sent her my first draft of “The City With No Animals” and after reading it, she told me she’d like to work with me too. I was over the moon! Yayayay! During that time, we also talked a bit about fees and payment structure so that I know how much hiring her is going to cost.

Creating good partnerships is a big goal of the Faerie Dark project. Having collaborated with others in many ways, I wanted every Faerie Dark project to be as beneficial for all as I could make it. There are many things I can’t do myself and I want working with me to be a good experience.

Artists
First draft, website, & lovely editor in “hand”, I’ve recently started exploring the next piece of the puzzle – commissioning artists!

Cover art and art in general is a very important element to creating books. I started exploring Deviantart for artists and styles that I really liked. I knew that I wanted to have nice covers and images for the websites – but that I may eventually want print books as well as e-books and other kinds of merchandise. I’d commissioned artists before, but never for art that might be used on for things that are going to be sold – which are known as commercial commissions.

Artists often get paid one of two ways for the use of their art. Some artists charge a flat-fee for work (whether once right up front or periodically depending on the cycle) or a royalty-based rate of the item being sold (paid periodically). Again, I’ve been very lucky in that both artists I’ve been looking at working with already have commercial commission rates. Just this past week, I finished my first commercial transaction with artist Michèle Liza Pelayre for art for a later project. Michèle was wonderful to work with – she answered a lot of my questions about her rates, worked very fast, and was pleasant & polite. I feel very lucky to have worked with her my first time and will definitely hire her in the future.

My 1st Product!
Through all these growing and learning experiences, I also ended up creating my first product for this website. For my end project for 001-b) the Moon Calendar – I created the Glitterati Society. It is a handbook on making magic and whimsy, with a new chapter released every new moon. There are group projects for every full moon that other mischief-makers will be participating in all over the world. The idea to make a handbook came from Gala Darling’s “Love & Sequins” book. I’ve bought every chapter and loved it, finding lots of inspiration and magic in it. I wanted to create something that would inspire magic too, with my own style and something that would be fun to create.

Now, the next piece – creating a really strong character and bringing her to life!

If you’ve enjoyed this website, please consider donating or purchasing a TGS chapter to fund the production of “The City With No Animals”!
