{glitter, glam, & whimsy}

Once upon a time, we lived seamlessly within the cycles of Nature. All of our wisdom came from it. The pattern of sunlight on a leaf, the unfolding of a flower, the lightning across the sky all contained the story of the universe.

Now, our world is a place of systems, automatic processes, synthesized instead of experienced. We learned to create much, but to destroy more. We’ve pulled away from the natural and begun to trust only that which we made. It’s a place of fear and dullness, where only how much we can gain, control, and consume matter. We make no room for the spontaneous, deny the miraculous and ignore the other world grown invisible to our eyes. We co-create the world and collectively, we have created a contrary world where the earth, our well being, beauty, love, and whimsical pleasure are all acceptable casualties in the pursuit of… dare we say it, the dreaded Mundane?

Someone must have put something in the drinking water… Oh wait, that was probably us too.

Fear not! What chance did you have in a world that had forgotten its gifts? Cast a few circles, throw a few impromptu parties and we’ll let bygones be bygones. Luckily, the temporary insanity that has afflicted us and the majority of the world’s population is lessening. We’re starting to see clearly and we’re seeing la vie en magique again.

But you must solemnly sweat that when the dreaded Mundane and frightful Ordinary try to suck you back in, you’ll strap something glittering and/or shiny to your shoulders/forehead/backside and kick your stripped stocking/hoofed/clawed/curly toed little feet for all you’re worth. We’re in a war here and you’ve just been promoted to International Secret Agent of Magic and Mystery!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to glitter, glam, and dance us out of this dreadfully boring era of fear mongering and crotchety systems into an electrifying, elevating, ecstatic era of enchantment!

How, you ask?

Stick with us, kiddo. We’ll show you the ropes.

Before we send you into battle with the dread (dun dun duuuuuuun) Mundane, we want to equip you with the strategies you’ll need to do some serious mischief. First off, the secret to your success will be how you in all your unique snowflake glory express your creativity. We give you the tools, but you’ll give them spark.

Glamourbombing ~* This is kind of where it all began for TGS. A while ago, a bunch of lovely folk got together and decided to work towards lifting the veil and taking action to fill the world with more wonder. They took part in actions that challenged observers’ perceptions of the world. Their acts were purposely styled to blur the lines between a magical reality and a mundane one. Think faerie houses out of natural materials tucked away in the forest, live plants twined around gates as if Nature is reclaiming, charms made of stones, shells, and other natural materials dropped in the pockets of unsuspecting victims. A good resource for this is the glamourbombing page over at Wildmuse.net!

Glitterbombing ~* Over time, the idea of glamourbombing has merged with other ideas and forms of creative expression. Glitterbombing is Glam’s younger sister, using glitter and wire wings instead of mysterious cloven footprints on a full moon’s night. It’s about “senseless acts of beauty” (FJ), making those under the nefarious spell of the Mundane look twice and jolting them back to Reality, remind them there is more than schedules, drab colours, and the Fear. Wear wings all day, pass out tickets to Neverland, make little treasure boxes and hide them in your neighbourhood. Go wild. Make what the Mundane has made work for us… then blast it to pieces with glitter and a smile.

Whimsy ~* Glitter & Glam take creativity and energy and while you’re stealthily poking holes in a Mundane reality for others, make sure you take time out to refuel your creative spark. One way to keep your rose-coloured glasses tinted, your outlook sparkly, and your hat tilted at a jaunty angle is to make sure you’re getting enough whimsical play in your daily diet. Take yourself on a spontaneous adventure in a beloved or unknown part of your city. Make time for adventure! Create a holiday and throw a theme party to tell everyone about it. Get yourself a pile of art supplies, put yourself in lock-down, and go nuts! Create and play! Don’t just poke holes in the Mundane by stirring up other people, make your life an experiment in the magical, mischievous, and marvelous! Yay alliteration!

fairy door

* Make a pile of tickets marked with locations like “fairyland”, “Avalon”, “the Moon”. Decorate appropriately. Pick a door or gate to a public building, park, or other space. Every time someone tries to pass you through the door or gate, hand them a ticket and say “You’ll need this”. Effective with or without a costume.

* Set-up an impromptu “fairy gate” between two trees using string and gauzy material hung from it. Tie the fabric back to the trunks of the trees using ribbon or leave flowing freely. Hang a sign or stake a signpost in the ground near it that says “This way to fairyland” or another whimsical place. Can also be done with holes in trees. Bonus points if you chalk sidewalks with arrows and directions leading to the door..

* At the gate to a public park post a sign that says “Beware the mommeraths”. Bonus points if you stick around in the park dressed as a mommerath. Note: can be done with any magical creature.

* Find holes in the ground, made by animals or humans. Put up a sign that says “This way to Wonderland” or a whimsical place of your choosing.

* Chalk a stretch of sidewalk in yellow. Label it “The Yellow Brick Road” or “This way to the Wicked Witch of the West”.

* Wait under a small bridge dressed as a troll or other creature. When someone gets close growl, giggle, or yell at them to get off your home. For a lighter version, bring small charms or prizes with you and randomly hand them out to people crossing the bridge.

* Chalk or post up a wooden door on a wall. Offer a prize to anyone who can open it. Bonus points if you make the door out of recycled/reclaimed materials.

* Chalk or post up a tiny wooden door on a wall. Chalk or paint tiny footsteps or animal prints along the sidewalk or down a wall towards the door. Bonus points if you make the door out of recycled/reclaimed materials.

{gateways, bridges, & doors!}

This moon’s theme is “gates, bridges, & doors”!

In 1997, the term “glamourbombing” was coined by the participants of a mailing list called “DarkFae”. They came together to collectively perform acts directed at thinning the veil between the realms and “causing people to feel brushed by the divine, the supernatural, or the realm of faerie” (quoted from Glamourbombing FAQ). They loosely organized mass glamourbombing activities to be performed around the Summer Solstice. One of the acts was the delivery of handwritten notes with the words “The gates are opening” written on them. Those notes are the inspiration for this moon’s theme!

Think of walking into a doorway and finding yourself in another world, Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole into wonderland. Find between places to transform into a gateway!

Until the next new moon, we’ll be posting ideas and inspirations related to the theme! If you have stories or ideas for whimsical adventures, glitterbombing, or glamourbombing projects please email us at theglitteratisociety@gmail.com! ~*
